“We took the best-selling floorplans from years past and combined them,” said Gudger. “You see the result when you walk into the 2008 Contessa.”
This year, Contessa offers five floorplans: a 38-footer, a 40-footer and three all-new 42-footers, all quad-slides. Returning floorplans include the 38 Huntington and the 40 Pacifica. The brand new floorplans include the 42 Westport, 42 Rome and 42 Milan.
The cockpit features a lighted VIP Smartwheel, audible turn signals, six-way OptimaLeather power cab seats with a closed pocket on the back, and a brand new automotive-style dash with a Bird’s Eye Burl instrumentation panel.
In the living area, Gudger is quick to point out that the overhead cabinets have also been redesigned. “It gives a feeling of better balance, plus we’ve increased storage [space],” he said.
Cherry solid wood cabinets are offered as part of the standard package, but you can opt to replace those with walnut or maple. There are also four fabric décors packages to choose from. The plush carpet comes standard, but if you like, you can upgrade to a full tile living room.
“In fact, since we started offering the optional full tile package I can’t remember the last time someone asked for carpet,” he said.
A 32-inch flatscreen LCD television comes standard in the cockpit overhead in all floorplans but the 42-foot Westport. “In that particular floorplan [the 42 Westport], we installed a 40-inch flatscreen TV into a hutch at the south end of the living area.”
One of the more exciting additions to the Contessa this year is a roll-out polished solid surface kitchen countertop extension that comes with under-counter storage.
The high-output cooktop comes with three sealed burners, and an overhead microwave/convection oven is installed flush with the overhead cabinets. A Norcold 12 cubic foot two-way four-door refrigerator with icemaker comes standard, but you can upgrade to a 14 cubic foot unit with a water dispenser in the door.
“The private bathroom is larger and the shower is constructed in a way that it can’t be viewed from the living area,” Gudger said. “The 42-foot Milan has a bath and a half, something we’ve never before offered in this price range.”
In the bedroom, cabinets and drawers provide an abundance of storage space as well as more polished solid-surface countertops. An optional ceiling fan can also be ordered for the bedroom.
On the exterior, the 2008 Contessa is available in four choices of deluxe full-body paint and new five-color blend and fade graphics. A keyless entry in the grab handle, baggage door lock-release and doorbell all come standard, along with automatic awnings on the patio and front door. Pass-through slideout storage trays are optional, and according to Gudger, “are added to almost all orders, because they make accessing the storage bays so easy.”
Built on the Roadmaster RR8S-Series Chassis and powered by a Caterpillar C-9 400 diesel engine, the 2008 Contessa promises to have some staying power out on the road. With an Allison 3000 MH six-speed transmission, automatic traction control, an exhaust brake and cushion air-glide suspension, when you’re behind the wheel of this RV, the only thing separating the Interstates from the rural highways is the number of lanes.
